Archdeacon for Mission, Diocese of New York
SUMMARY:
The Archdeacon for Mission in the Episcopal Diocese of New York is a full time position directly accountable to the Bishop of New York. The primary responsibility as a senior member of the bishop’s staff is to serve as advisor to, and representative of, the bishop regarding our witness to Christian ethics, mission and outreach. A secondary, but never the less important responsibility will be building and maintaining an administrative and organizational infrastructure to support the broad objectives of this dimension of the Bishop’s Office.REQUIREMENTS:
Ordained Episcopal priestExperience in parish ministry
DESIREABLE QUALIFICATIONS:
Communication skills including but not limited to:Ability to write and to speak clearly and effectivelyExperience with not-for-profit agencies, laws, policies and procedures
Convey an impression which favorably reflects the diocese
Experience with relating to press and media
Education, training in foreign languages
Capacity to work with and sensitivity to working in multi-cultural settings
Demonstrates high level of administrative competence
POSITION DUTIES AND AREAS OF RESPONSIBILITY:
The Archdeacon’s internal responsibility as a member of the diocesan staff will focus on and revolve around the following areas:Committees – She or he will be the staff contact with the
Social Concerns Committee
Congregational Life for Mission Commission
Reparations Committee
Astor Fund Advisory Board
Children’s Advocacy Committee
Anti-racism Committee, and other committees as assigned.
Communications – She or he will work closely and collaboratively with the Communications Department of the Diocese, especially with the Bishop’s Deputy for Public Affairs.
Cathedral – She or he will be a liaison to the Cathedral Church of St. John the Divine, particularly with its outreach and international ministry.
Language Congregations – She or he will assist the bishop in focused mission initiatives that honor and celebrate diversity through cultural sensitivity, training, planning and leadership development and as assigned.
The Archdeacon’s external responsibilities as a member of the bishop’s staff will focus on and revolve around the following areas:
ECUSA & Anglican Communion – She or he will, along with the bishop’s office, be a primary contact for the diocese with the national church and the rest of the Communion. The Archdeacon for Mission is the Jubilee Officer for the Diocese of New York.
Ecumenical & Inter-faith – She or he will work closely with the Diocesan Ecumenical Commission, as well as being a primary representative to the New York State Council of Churches, the Commission of Religious Leaders of New York City, and the various denominations and faiths of the metropolitan area.
Government & Social Agencies – She or he will represent the bishop where needed, and provide the interface with city, state and federal contacts.
International – She or he will support our partnerships with other Provinces and Dioceses of the Anglican Communion (e.g. – Africa Committee, India Network, China, Haiti Network, Diocese of London, Dominican Republic, Honduras and other connections that will emerge and develop).
